Description

U.S. in Contact with Muslim Brothers: Pragmatism or Idealism? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the United States will expand its contacts with Egypt's largest opposition bloc, the Muslim Brotherhood, that promotes Islamic principles. The group was officially banned from 1954 until June this year. "We believe, given the changing political landscape in Egypt, that it is in the interests of the United States to engage with all parties that are peaceful and committed to non-violence," said Clinton on a visit to Budapest on June 30. "And we welcome, therefore, dialogue with those Muslim Brotherhood members who wish to talk with us." Clinton emphasized that contacts would be "limited", while trying to downplay the significance of the announcement by suggesting this approach would merely be an expansion of existing policy.
